Jane and Liza are two recent graduates of The Shade Tree Job Skills Development Program

These are just two examples of the many women who are learning the skills necessary to break the cycle.

Liza is a single mother of a beautiful 3-year-old girl. She came to the shelter after a painfully violent episode in her family. Due to the violence she suffered, Lisa was accepted directly into our Transitional Shelter Program. Liza was quickly assigned both a Case Manager and a Job Developer. She has been diligent in meeting regularly with both staff members and is closely following the Case Plan and Employment Plan that she helped to create. Liza attended all Job Development classes and graduated from the program.

Liza was referred to a local upscale car dealer for employment. She began as a greeter and was recently promoted to a Receptionist/Office worker. Liza has taken advantage of every opportunity for progress that has been available to her. She was offered the opportunity to apply for housing at an apartment complex that provides Section 8 housing and has just learned that she was accepted. After 3 months Liza will be leaving the shelter with a budding career and stable, secure, and affordable housing for herself and her child. We wish her the very best!

Jane is a young woman in her mid 20's with a mild learning disability. Jane was raised primarily in foster homes; her mother was addicted to crack cocaine and is now in prison. After her difficult childhood in the mid-west she left her hometown to attempt a fresh start. She has two children; both of whom have been adopted by caring family members.

Jane was staying in a weekly motel and only came to The Shade Tree when her money ran out. Jane entered the Emergency Shelter Program and quickly began completing tasks that would move her toward independence and self-reliance. She applied for housing, Medicaid, and other needed services. She attended Job Development classes and quickly graduated from the program.

Jane had then made enough progress to be promoted to our Transitional Shelter Program. Since moving into this program Jane has worked tirelessly with her Job Development Specialist; they meet on a daily basis. She has been submitting over 15 job applications every week. This past week Jane was extended three different job offers! She excitedly accepted a full-time permanent position that provides complete benefits! We congratulate Jane; her efforts have proven fruitful.
