Safe Place Site
For All Community Youth
Kids experience many difficult situations: problems at school, trouble with peers,
being locked out of the house, riding with
an unsafe driver, being in a dangerous situation
on a date.
Kids also leave home for many reasons: to escape abuse or neglect, drug or
alcohol problems of family members, their families
make them leave, they feel they
don't belong. Many
times leaving home is not a choice they want to make, yet national
agencies estimate that over one million young people run away from
home each year.
No matter what the reason, kids do have a safe alternative. They
can go to The Shade Tree, or any other designated Safe Place site
to get immediate help. These young people deserve access to a Safe
Place and a chance to think through their problems with the support
of caring adults.
The Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth has designated The Shade
Tree as an approved 'Safe Place' for homeless or frightened youth
here in Las Vegas. Any youth feeling threatened or unsafe for any
reason can come to The Shade Tree for immediate protection. We will
provide assistance and information and offer them something to eat
and drink.
When possible and appropriate, the youth is reunited with their family.
In other cases we follow all established laws in determining the
appropriate referral or placement outcome. With the passage of the
new Right To Shelter Law some female minors are now being housed
at The Shade Tree.
Safe Place began in 1983 in Louisville, Kentucky and is now
implemented by youth-service agencies across the country. Since
its inception in 1983, as many as 68,663 youths have received help at Safe
Place sites in 42 states and 714 communities.
